I’m always trying to get my eyelashes to be full and thick which is why I curl my eyelashes before applying mascara. The last good mascara I had was probably Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Mascara. With the pointy purple packaging. I like my eyes to pop and that one gave me volume and length. This Benefit They’re Real mascara is in a league of its own.

Background

This product has some bold claims! Even at the top of the packaging it says that it is “beyond mascara”.

“They’re real! lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts and separates. Our jet black, long-wearing formula won’t smudge or dry out. A specially designed brush reveals lashes you never knew you had!” – Benefit Cosmetic website

According to Benefit, these are their results after conducting a consumer panel survey:

  • 94% saw dramatic length & volume
  • 94% saw visible lift
  • 100% saw long-wearing results

  • Temptalia’s Reader’s Choice Award for Best High-End Mascara
  • Women’s Health Beauty Awards, Readers’ Choice for Best Mascara, 2014

Packaging and brush

I really like the shiny silver packaging. It stands out on my makeup table. The brush is bigger than my other cheaper mascaras and it also has a spiky tip so that you can fan out the lashes better. I like using that tip to fan out the outer corner lashes and sometimes to coat my lower lashes. The brush is plastic which I feel helps fan out the lashes better while reducing clumps.

About the mascara brush

The mascara

The mascara itself is more or less the same consistency as the usual mascaras I use. I think it might be a bit thicker. The real difference comes in when you apply the product to your lashes. I always apply about 2-3 coats of mascara. That’s really all you need with this product. It goes on easily but it does set faster than other mascaras so you do need to work a bit faster.

Look at this beauty
  • The first thing I noticed it that it separated my lashes a lot and there was very little clumping!
  • It held the curl of my lashes well
  • My lashes had that fanned out look that I like
  • It made my lashes look thicker and longer

The directions say to wiggle the wand horizontally from base to tip, which is what I did. I don’t usually apply mascara that way and I’m not sure why. I think it’s because previous brands have made my lashes clump when I do it that way.

Verdict

I would HIGHLY recommend this product. I am no mascara expert but this one is now my Holy Grail of mascaras. It is pricey (R295 at Red Square and Edgars) but then again this is a high-end product. I’m definitely looking after this baby and I will absolutely repurchase if I can.

I’ve posted a big lashes method on this blog before which involved putting powder on lashes first and then a coat of mascara. I think it’s safe to say that as long as this mascara continues, there’s no need to use those alternative methods.

Perhaps next time I will get the smaller, travel size one, They’re Real Mini. Just so I won’t break the bank.
